A Prison Sentence.

So my 10 month old son has taken to waking up in the middle of the night, standing at the edge of his crib, and screaming his bloody head off. It’s far less fun than it sounds, if you can believe that.

What he wants most is for someone (namely me, ’cause my 2-year-old daughter is my wife’s responsibility in the small hours) to come pick him up and hold him. Maybe he’d even like to get into my bed so he can sleep somewhere that’s not his bed.

I am not down with this.

I’ve taken to going into his room and sitting with him. It occurred to me the first night I watched him try to stay awake (between the hours of 4:45 and 6:15) that it’d be super fun to photograph him, so I set up some lights the next night and caught this around 5:45. To my mind, he’s plotting his escape. He’s gonna get out of this dump, he figures. He’ll find a family that’ll treat him the way he wants.

I’m sure I should be doing more to help him, but at least this way, we’ll have proof of his idiosyncratic nocturnal ways when he’s bigger.

And maybe by then, it’ll be funnier than it is tragic.

A Moment of Frustration.

I told Nia to look like someone’d just run over her dog.
The face was amazing, but wrong.
Then I told her to shut her eyes and open her mouth really wide.

This is what we got:

I figure she’s a woman in a moment and she’s just made a very big decision.

Happy Holidays.

Yeah.
This is the same shot as this, but in color.

It’s a busy day with the two kids who live at my house. I’ll have newer, more interesting stuff next week.

Happy holidays, folks.

More Spy Stuff.

Though we were shooting at a motel, Richard’s car afforded some slightly different scenes. I grabbed these outside as we were beginning the day. I was really happy with the way the reflections came out on the second one.

On A Mission.

I “met” Thadd through ModelMayhem. He’s one of the small group of people on the site who’s not just interested in shooting glossy glam photos all the time. He’s up for a different kind of challenge.

We talked a bit via email and conspired to meet to shoot together. I invited Richard and a buddy of mine, Nia, to come along and the four of us checked into a motel on the southside of Richmond for a few hours. We shot for a little over 4 hours and came away with a lot of cool stuff.

We grabbed lunch at a pizza joint nearby and parted ways by the early afternoon. We’re totally gonna cook up something else to work on together and do it again. We all had a blast.

I’m learning some post process from Richard — little things about cleaning up edges in images and working with skin tones. A recent one is putting these bars on the tops and bottoms of images to make a more cinematic feel. I’m thrilled for the tutelage and pleased with my results so far. Look for a few more images from this series as the week goes by.

Small vs. Big.

I really like (although I am not very good at) playing soccer. I coached in one place or another for about 10 years of my teaching career, growing to appreciate the sport and still not getting a lot better at it.

One of my favorite times as a player (did I mention that I wasn’t very good?) was when I played at an indoor sporting facility called RISE. Playing indoor means wearing slightly different shoes than playing outside. It also means that one can immediately enjoy a beer after a match with one’s teammates ’cause there’s a bar on the premises, but it’s the shoes that are important.

I wear these most of the time ’cause they’re comfortable and if they’re not too terribly beat up, they match a lot of my clothing, looking simultaneously neat and casual. They’re Adidas Sambas and when I found a pair that fit my daughter when she was still a baby, I snapped them up. Now that my son is that size, he wears them. ‘Cause after all, it’s not like either of them did (or is gonna do) a lot of walking in them,

I’d been thinking about doing a shot like this for a while and finally got around to it. I’m not sure I’m finished with it ’cause the placement of the shoes might need some work. Nonetheless, it makes me smile to see them.

Backstory.

mystery lady-5628

I’m working on a shoot later this week that’ll combine the creative forces of two other photographers, both with more technical skill than my own, one model who I think will be amazing, and me.

This is not the model, though she is amazing. I should explain.

I like working on large scale productions. I enjoy putting things in motion that will yield more than a single photograph. Working collaboratively makes that possible. Not only do I get the opportunity to shoot a few frames for myself, but I get the chance to help “script” or create photographic moments for other people.

This particular shoot requires some props that are a bit esoteric – this photograph, for instance – and so I’ve been putting them together. I’ll be happy to share when I get something of interest.

In the meantime, who’s that lady?

When There Was Film.

Katie

This is ancient. And it’s a scan from a print, not the neg.
It was cold and Katie understood how silly she looked and was therefore doing her level best not to giggle for this exposure. Right after this instant, she doubled over with laughter.

Go figure.

Nice Legs, With a Side of Books.

A buddy of mine who blogs had a boooooring photograph as her icon.
I suggested that we fix it.
This is what we got.

karen avatar-5598

She hemmed and hawed about the way her legs look, complained that they weren’t the ones she saw in the mirror every morning.
We got to thinking, how do you ever really know what you look like to other people until you see yourself in a photograph? I know that every now and again, I pass by mirrors and catch a glimpse of what I really look like instead of what I think I look like, which is who I was when I was 22. It’s funny.

And probably why I’m more comfortable on this side of the camera.

To Grand Central and Beyond.

subway001.jpg

Another from the archives. This was on film (yeah, remember film?) on a trip to New York a couple of years back. The shutter was open for like half a second or something while I held my breath, trying not to jiggle the camera. It might be fun to go back to try again at some stuff like this.
