Follow the Leader. He Rides a Honda.

On the way back from spending Thanksgiving with my parents , I got an email from Richard Upshur, a local (and really good, I might add) photographer I’d “met” through flickr. He said he was doing a “bike shoot” and wanted to know if I was interested in coming to snap a few.

I was thrilled. I thought it’d be fun to meet someone in real life (IRL, in internet parlance) whose work I admired.

What I wasn’t expecting was that Richard would be a lighting virtuoso. He had a million speedlights in his bag — they sorta kept coming out like a clown car at the circus. He was was lightning fast at setting them up, too. His placements and light balance were so perfect that it made more sense just to ask how to set my camera than to try to figure anything out on my own.

The model we worked with is a buddy of his and can be found on Model Mayhem, should you be interested.

I’m looking forward to shooting some more with these guys!

What to Do…

When my daughter was born my wife told me that failing all else, I’d always have a willing model.
I took that to heart over the weekend and during a walk that culminated in hang time for us at the playground, I snapped a few of my daughter. She loves to have her picture taken, always saying after the shutter-click, “I wanna see!”

I was playing around with some post processing ’cause I came across this blog the other day. I like the overall tone of some of his recent stuff and think I might wanna try later.

Made for Walkin’ (in the rain).

My daughter talked about these for days after my wife brought them home from a colleague whose daughter had outgrown them.

Despite the chaos that last week’s torrential rain caused, there was one really happy little girl at my house ’cause she got to wear these. While, I’m glad she got to wear them, I hope it doesn’t rain again any time soon.

Straight Outta NOLA.

This is Louis Ledford.
He makes music.
His website is here.
We only had 30 minutes after 8 o’clock the other night.

Check out some of his music here and his myspace page.

We Now Rejoin Bullitt, Already in Progress…

That’s actually a line from this movie, but it’s fitting here.
‘Cause this post is about a different movie.

My buddy Jai Jamison is working on a new film with some of his classmates and buddies from American University where they’re in the graduate film program. They were doing some of their principal photography here in Richmond near the Lee Monument and asked me to swing by to shoot a few frames so they’d have some behind the scenes images.

I came down for a bit and hung out. It’s interesting to see the similarities between still and motion photography. They think about light so much more than the causal observer of a motion picture might think. Moreover, it was kinda cool to stand around during a movie shoot. Folks slow their cars down, they walk by a little slower. They’re curious. They wonder if someone famous is around all that fancy looking equipment.

Anyway, these are a couple of what I got. I can’t wait to see the finished product.

Amiss.

I just realized that this is the first week is a LONG time that I haven’t had at least 3 posts.
Please forgive.

Anyway, here’s the new TLR I was telling you about. I’m hoping to do some stuff with it in the next week or so that I can share. Fingers crossed.

A Lack of Color.

IMG_2668

I was moving my Lightroom catalog over from one machine to another and saw this image, shot digitally in color, and did a quick color conversion and crop. It works and makes me think it might be fun to sift back through the whole catalog to see what images re-present themselves to me.

Testing, Testing…

I got a new camera the other day. It’s a replacement Yashica TLR for one that I have that doesn’t work.

The neat thing about it is the glow that the lens creates around figures in the image. Its previous owner hated this, which is why I have it. I figured the dreaminess was neat. I was right.

The first roll I ran through was to test the camera. The images haven’t had any real post processing done to them because I recently upgraded my work computer and I haven’t had a chance to install CS4 yet. But for those of you who’re curious, the film here is expired Kodak Ektachrome 160T, overexposed a stop. I can’t wait to try this with models!

Iconic.

no

I’m pretty sure I never blogged this image, but it’s easily my favorite image of all the film shots I’ve made. If not the fave, definitely in the top 5. I use it as an icon on numerous places, notably here.
The story behind it is kinda fun. He was 6 (I think) at the time. He’s gotta be more like 12 now. Anyway, I was testing cross process and deciding how I liked it. His mom had come in to the Darkroom (remind me to tell you more about Martha’s Darkroom sometime) to pick up some prints she’d ordered and I asked them both if I could take his picture. It wouldn’t be the last time I got the chance, but it would definitely be the best.
Anyway, they agreed and we wandered down to the corner of 2nd Street and Main, in downtown Richmond and very quickly snapped off a roll (12 images).
He wasn’t at all mad. In fact, we had to work to construct the look on his face. Got him to cover his ears, open his mouth really wide and squinch up his eyes…
Still, I love this shot.

And Strrrrretch.

pilates-0531

Did some scouting for an upcoming client shoot and snapped a few of the space.
When she did this (without warming up, I might add), I had to snap one.
Whoa.
