The flash was supposed to fire but I’d forgotten to turn it on. The result was this image. I almost deleted it from the camera but figured it’d be a good choice to blog. There’s a sort of teachable moment in this image for me because it’s a such a huge reminder of how many things I need to think about while I’m shooting.

Misfire.
The Smallest Cosmonaut.
Again with the props, yeah? It was hard to pass this up when I found it on eBay. I almost bought two of them ’cause they were so cool. Since there’s this picture of my daughter, Zoe, I thought that my son Henry would enjoy equal time. He was actually pretty mad for most of this impromptu shoot and this was a moment of quiet.
All Tatted Up.
I’m diggin’ back through the archives until I get some new stuff to put up and I thought these might be a nice pair.
The first is from a wedding I shot (pro bono for a friend, as the assistant). The bride’s mother had made her gown and it was amazing. Really, the photo doesn’t do it justice. It shimmered in ways that I could never capture on film. I did the best I could, but cross processed film is persnickety. Her tattoo was amazing in the middle of this dress.
The second was this girl, although I never shot this as a part of the series she asked for. It’s the serenity prayer, which is kind of a cool thing to have with you at all times.
Bokeh.
One of the local camera stores is liquidating much of its inventory, getting rid of things they’ve had in stock for ages. They put ads on Craigslist to notify folks of what they have and there were a few manual focus Pentax K-mount lenses left so I picked one up for fun.
It turns out, the 28mm lens I scored is faster than any of my other Pentax lenses and is smart enough to allow the camera to control its aperture despite the manual focus.
The reason such things are interesting is called bokeh. It’s the blurring of the elements in a photograph due to the way the lens “sees” because of depth of field (roughly, the combination of focal length and maximum aperture).
Anyway, this image shows that, despite having been shot with a Hasselblad.
With No Interruption of Service.

Working the Land(scape).
I’ve been looking at a lot of work by other people and, as I’ve mentioned here before, I’m not really all that thrilled with my landscape photography. Beyond that, I have this Holga camera that seems underutilized. I was truly inspired by this fellow to just kinda shoot stuff with the camera and see where it took me.
With all that in mind, I went traipsing around the city back to some of the places that I thought, “That’d make a great photograph.” as I’d passed them before and grabbed a few.
I scanned them and then toned them the way I might’ve if I’d been printing them and I kinda like what I got, although I’d probably print a film border and a bit of a vignette. Whatever the case, here are 4:
It’s interesting how the lens bends things in its sight. It’s an aberration I wasn’t expecting but I’m really growing to love when I see straight lines captured.
