It’s the Weekend.
The Project Unveiled.
(sort of)
This is the graphic design end of a project I’ve had working in the back of my mind for a while. I’ve finally got the models together. I’m getting the images done and Joe at Brainchild Collective (who’s a WIZ at this stuff, I gotta say) is workin’ the layout. Another update in a few weeks will clear things up some more, but whoa. Ain’t that a pretty logo? (low whistle)
Old News.
It’s funny how the first two weeks of every fall semester seem like the hardest — at least until I get to the last two weeks. Those invariably feel worse.
I say this mostly because I usually have my students give this image a once over toward the end of a semester. It looks like a man traveling. Their responses are always engaging. Some think he’s Jewish. Others make him out to be a cheater (on his wife, not at cards). Still others make it clear that he’s a serial killer. In real life, his name’s David and this was total grab shot. It was cold and the sun was setting and given what I had to work with, there was no credible shot I could pull off. Or so I thought. As far as my personal work goes, this is iconic. It’s one of my all-time favorites.
It’s Like Knowing a Secret.
In an effort to show my students what a blog is / oughtta be like / acts like, I offered up this one. It’s the closest to a long term assignment that I’ve ever come.
I explained that mostly there are pictures but from time to time, I actually craft words (given that I am kinda good at it) and put them here for everyone to see.
I’ll be curious how many of them are paying attention. It makes me grin, just a little — like the little girl in this photo. She was standing around being a precocious 5 year old while I was trying to shoot her mom. I figured it was easier to incorporate her than to tell her to get lost. She stood there for the first shot and it looked almost right. I pulled the bear out of one of the suitcases (You never know when a ratty old teddy bear like FooFee here is gonna be a good prop.) and handed it to her. Still not right. I got her to smile and put her hand over her mouth and this little bit of stolen goodness came out. It looks completely random but is painfully posed. Go figure.
The door to that house isn’t yellow anymore either.
Radio Silence.
Shoot to Kill.
The Master at His Craft.
I was thinking along the lines of being “back at the lab, cookin’ up some stuff” when I was envisioning this. It was a pretty simple set up and since we’re trying to sell our house, the kitchen is nigh immaculate. Anyway, the subject, is Calvin and the delicious post, as per usual is by Joe at Brainchild Collective.
Old Friends.
These two have known each other since something like the third grade. Now they’re almost 18 and they’ve agreed to help me with a relatively big project. I’ll clue more in when I get further along. So far, so good though.
This is rough, as I’m not sure what’s going to happen with the tones here. This may become high contrast black and white. I’m not sure yet. Once I’ve collected all of the images, I’l have a better feel.
Watchoutnow!
An outtake from my recent shoot with Calvin Jamison today.
I taught him 9th grade English and now he’s grown up to be a bit of a Renaissance man: well read, clever conversationalist, and filmmaker. He’s kinda slow on the “getting a site” front, but his work’s pretty cool.
Anyway, he needed some publicity-esque photos and we came up with a couple of goofy ones that I think show his sense of humor and lighter side. I’m waiting on the usual amazing postproduction from Brainchild Collective but in the meantime, here’s a rough cut.
